Mentorship plays a critical role in PhD training with significantly impact on academic progress, research leadership, professional development, networking, collaborations and so on. I would wish us to engage in the above further by  reacting to these two questions. This will help us group the members here into groups based on mentorship areas(needs) and have discussion on which a mentor will give inputs.

      a. In which areas (in general PhD training) do you feel the most urgent need for mentorship?

      b. In which areas (in general PhD training) are you most strong ?

Thank you, Dr Cavens, for emphasizing the critical role of mentorship in PhD training. Mentorship is indeed essential for academic achievement, enhancing research capabilities, and fostering professional growth.

A crucial area where PhD candidates often need more intensive mentorship is in developing and refining their research concepts and methodologies. This aspect is the foundation of all successful research endeavors. Errors in this initial phase can compromise all future efforts. Consequently, it’s imperative for PhD students to seek strong support in this area. Seasoned scholars should dedicate time to mentor emerging researchers in crafting their methodologies and conceptual frameworks, meeting the urgent demand for guidance in these foundational aspects.

Importantly, achieving this does not require extensive resources or significant funding; simple networking with academic peers and mentors can prove to be incredibly advantageous. Platforms and academic networks like this one, APHRC COP, are invaluable for nurturing these crucial connections.

As a scholar specializing in Library,  information and communication science , I have a keen interest in literature review, data analytics, research dissemination, and networking. I am enthusiastic about providing mentorship in these areas, using my experience and skills  to support others in their academic pursuits.
