Short bio
My name is Emmanuel Mani Ogega, a biomedical scientist with a Bachelorβs degree in Medical Biotechnology and practical experience in molecular diagnostics, genomic sequencing, and infectious disease surveillance. I have worked in national public health laboratory programs in Kenya, including the National HIV Reference Laboratory, where I contributed to HIV viral load testing, drug resistance surveillance, and genomic sequencing activities. My work has involved the use of advanced molecular platforms such as next-generation sequencing technologies, as well as laboratory information management systems to support disease monitoring and research.
My research interests are centered on molecular epidemiology, infectious disease genomics, and public health surveillance, particularly in the context of high-burden diseases in Africa such as HIV, hepatitis, and emerging infectious diseases. I am especially interested in how genomic technologies and molecular data can be integrated with public health systems to improve disease surveillance, understand transmission dynamics, and inform evidence-based interventions that strengthen health systems across the continent.
Within the Virtual Academies organized by the African Population and Health Research Center and CARTA, my role is to actively engage in the interdisciplinary learning environment that these platforms provide. I see the academies as an important opportunity to strengthen my research capacity in areas such as research design, scientific writing, data analysis, and research ethics. They also provide a valuable platform for collaboration with early-career and established researchers across Africa who are working to address pressing population and health challenges.
Through participation in these academies, I hope to further develop my research skills and contribute to collaborative knowledge generation that supports improved health outcomes and sustainable development in Africa. Ultimately, my long-term goal is to contribute to strengthening public health research capacity and advancing the use of molecular and genomic tools in disease surveillance and health policy development across the region.
