This goes to the Interns. What is one topic we covered that you feel you need a refresher on? And, more importantly, what
is one HR/admin topic we have not covered yet that you wish we had time for?
The forum is open to anyone who would like to conduct a training session for the interns.

@stacy Akinyi LinkedIn optimization is such a practical one. I would also love tips on how to tailor a cover letter when you're applying outside your direct field.

One topic I would appreciate a refresher on:
Time management and prioritisation, particularly managing multiple assignments, meeting deadlines, and balancing urgent tasks with longer-term responsibilities.

One HR/admin topic I wish we had covered:
Understanding payroll, benefits and employment administration; including payslips, statutory deductions, leave policies, insurance/benefits, and the administrative processes that come with transitioning from an intern to an employee to help us even beyond internship.

@guest586@aphrc.org This  is noted and I am going to put it as one of the topics we should cover before the end of Internship.

@Grace Khatenya The payroll/benefits session would be so valuable, especially the intern-to-employee transition piece. Seconding this!

I’d be interested in a session on how to build a portfolio career, especially how to position yourself when you have multiple areas of experience and interest without making it look like you’re doing everything.

@Michelle Wanguku Shiroya This is a great angle. I think many of us have varied interests and struggle with how to present that coherently. Would love this session too.

@Michelle Shiroya Thank you for raising this as it is one of the challenges many of us are facing.

I am looking forward to schedule a training session for this issue.

@All One topic I would appreciate a refresher on:
Interview preparation and public speaking skills. While we touched on career readiness, I think many of us would benefit from a deeper dive into how to structure answers using the STAR method, how to handle competency-based and behavioural interview questions, and how to manage nerves and present confidently, whether in an interview panel or when presenting to a team. Public speaking, in particular, is something that takes practice, and a session on structuring talks, using body language, and engaging an audience would be incredibly useful as we prepare for the next step in our careers.
One HR/admin topic I wish we had covered:
Workplace communication and professional etiquette. Specifically how to navigate email etiquette, giving and receiving feedback, understanding hierarchy and reporting lines and how to communicate professionally across different platforms (email, Slack/Teams, in-person). These are the everyday skills that aren't always explicitly taught but make a huge difference in how we're perceived and how smoothly we transition into full-time roles.

@Rhoda Nakhosi This is a good topic and it is a very crucial one.

It was listed as one of our agenda for the trainings and we are soon covering it. hank you

@Nonvicks, it's encouraging to see the training calendar taking shape in real time.
On the interview preparation and public speaking session, one suggestion: could we make it practical rather than theoretical? Instead of just walking through the STAR method, maybe we could do a live mock interview or a short impromptu speaking exercise where we each get feedback. I think the nerves piece; managing anxiety, thinking on your feet, handling a question you didn't prepare for, is what most of us actually struggle with, and that's hard to learn from a slide deck. Even a 5-minute practice round per person would make a huge difference.
Also, since so many topics are now on the table (LinkedIn, cover letters, payroll, portfolio careers, interview prep, public speaking, workplace etiquette), would it help to prioritise them or run a quick poll so we can make sure the most urgent ones happen before the internship ends?

@Rhoda Nakhosi Appreciate the thoughtful suggestions! Making the session interactive and prioritizing the topics sound like great ideas. I'm taking this into consideration and consulting the person responsible for the schedule to see how we can best execute this. I'll share an update as soon as I get their input.

@guest591@aphrc.org This is a great point adding AI preparedness and change management to the list makes a lot of sense. I'll include these in my conversation with the responsible team member to see where they fit best into the calendar.
