The Fellowship brings outstanding young leaders from across Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for a six-week leadership institute at a U.S. college or university, where Fellows build leadership skills, expand professional networks, and develop connections with American organizations and communities.

Who Can Apply?

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is open to young African leaders who:

Are 25–35 years old on or before October 13, 2026.

Are citizens and residents of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country.

Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Are eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa.

Are not employees or immediate family members of employees of the U.S. Government.

Are proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Are not alumni or prior participants of the Mandela Washington Fellowship.

What Makes a Strong Applicant?

Competitive applicants typically demonstrate:

A proven record of accomplishment in business, trade, emerging technologies, governance, and/or security.

A clear interest in building and maintaining partnerships with American organizations and businesses that advance shared goals.

A commitment to return to Sub-Saharan Africa and use their skills and experience to contribute to their communities.

The ability to work cooperatively with others and respect different perspectives.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Adaptability and the ability to lead effectively in different and changing environments.
