Hi @everyone,
Over the past few weeks and months, we've been taken through a series of sessions that, honestly, go far beyond the typical intern orientation/trainings. We've covered:
  • Job search strategies beyond APHRC
  • How to prepare an ATS-friendly CV
  • LinkedIn optimization
  • Portfolio creation
  • Career clarity and career visibility
  • Professional branding and networking
  • Public speaking skills
  • Getting promoted without asking
Looking at that list, I realize these aren't just "internship tips" they're career-shaping skills that many professionals don't encounter until years into their journey. And because we've all sat through the same sessions, I'm curious about what actually landed for each of us.
So here's the question:
Which one of these topics has genuinely shifted how you think about your career, and why? Maybe it was the ATS CV session that made you realize your CV was invisible to machines. Maybe LinkedIn optimization made you rethink your entire online presence. Maybe "career clarity" forced you to sit with questions you'd been avoiding. Or maybe "getting promoted without asking" challenged everything you assumed about how advancement works.
And a follow-up for those willing to go deeper:
  • Have you actually applied any of these since the session? What happened?
  • Was there a topic you initially dismissed but later realized mattered?
  • Which topic do you wish had been covered in more depth?
Looking forward to hearing what stuck with everyone.

LinkedIn session probably had the biggest impact. I actually had no real online professional presence before the internship, and I was one of those people who didn’t really think having LinkedIn was that important.

But after the session, my perspective definitely changed. I realised how important professional visibility and networking are, and LinkedIn is actually such a good platform for both. It gives you a space to put yourself and your work out there, connect with people in your field, and also just see what other people are doing and learn from them.

@Michelle Wanguku Shiroya I love that you named the shift so honestly, going from "I didn't think LinkedIn mattered" to seeing it as a visibility and networking tool is exactly the kind of perspective change these sessions were meant to trigger. And the point about learning from others on the platform is underrated; it's not just about being seen, it's about seeing what's possible. Now that you've started building your presence, what's been the hardest part, actually posting, or figuring out what to say?

For me, career clarity and visibility had the biggest impact. It made me think more intentionally about the kind of professional I want to become and how I position myself.

I also found the LinkedIn and professional branding sessions very useful because they changed how I present my skills and experience online.

I’d love to learn more about building meaningful professional connections.

@Norah Kipruto Career clarity and visibility is such a strong pick, because it's the foundation everything else sits on. You can have a perfect CV and an optimized LinkedIn, but if you haven't thought intentionally about the professional you want to become, the rest is just decoration. I like that you paired it with branding because the two really do work together.
You mentioned wanting to learn more about building meaningful professional connections. What does "meaningful" look like to you, is it depth with a few people, or breadth across a network?

Honestly, it's hard to pick just one. Every session shifted how I think about my career in a different way, whether that was sharpening my CV and LinkedIn, building a portfolio, getting clearer on my direction, or learning how to network, speak publicly, and position myself for growth.
I've already started putting this into practice, especially with my CV, LinkedIn, and portfolio, and I'm already seeing the difference. What stood out most is that none of this felt like "internship-only" advice. These are skills I'll keep using throughout my career.
If I could change one thing, I'd want more time on career growth, networking, and personal branding. I could have easily spent a lot longer on those.

@Naomi Masanja Gathege This is such a well-rounded reflection, and I appreciate that you didn't force yourself to pick just one. The line that stood out to me is that none of this felt like "internship-only" advice, that's exactly the point. These are career skills, and the fact that you've already applied them to your CV, LinkedIn, and portfolio (and are seeing a difference) says a lot about how you're approaching this season.
Noted on wanting more time on career growth, networking, and personal branding. That's helpful feedback. When you say you're seeing a difference, what does that look like in practice? More responses, better conversations, or just feeling more confident in how you present yourself?

I once struggled with career clarity, feeling scattered and unsure of the direction I wanted to take. When I reached out to Eric, he referred me to a meeting that became a turning point. Attending that session sparked a shift in my perspective, and later, during a physical discussion with him, the thoughtful questions he asked helped me reflect deeply. Through that process, I discovered a stronger sense of purpose and finally understood what I truly want for my career.

But Overall its very hard to select one particular aspect because I feel like every session he took us through was very, very vital. You all can testify this services he was giving us free of charge are paid for out there. From creating a good ATS CV to building networks, no one is gonna teach you that out there. Once again, many thanks to him.

@Shamim Kowa Talla, What strikes me in your story is that it wasn't the session alone that shifted things. It was the conversation afterward. The session sparked it, but the one-on-one questions with Eric are what made it land. That's a reminder that career clarity rarely comes from a slide deck; it comes from someone asking you the right question at the right time. I personally also benefited a lot from this session and i appreciate you naming the value plainly. These are skills people pay for, and we got them free. That shouldn't be lost on any of us. If you're willing to share what was the question he asked that made you reflect most deeply?
